Aalto and my smile
Aalto was never a great student, he was never a prize-winning student, or a good draftsman in the conventional sense of period. He had rather anxious ‘country boy’ mentality in the early years, and throughout his life was inconsistent in relaying facts, even about his own life.
All these are surprises for the student or anyone who may have experienced the prevailing attitude of parents and many teachers that only high marks and overnight achievement of ‘excellence’ are needed for eventual success in life. On the contrary, these are gained in time, through a life-long process of discipline and creative advancement.
